Chapter IV: Changed
Ami and I spent that time at dawn discussing our misadventures without eachother. I enjoyed the relative peace that seemed to constantly elude me, but the dream wouldn't leave me. My responses were slow and delayed, leaving Ami obviously worried too.
I tried to avoid the subject of my shadow, as long as I stayed alive, she wouldn't need to worry.
Ami had stayed alive through the raid only because of our father. He was able to hide her in a hidden chamber in our home. She wanted to get out to help the fight, but he had sealed the hideaway magically and it didn't break for three days. She had just been living off of the supplies left in town for awhile, then she hunted for herself. I think I would have preferred that lifestyle to my own experience that past month.
The sun came up over the horizon in a sudden display of glorious light. I had never appreciated seeing that thing come over the distance so much as I did then. My eyes needed to adjust to the light after my ordeal.
"Whoa!" I squinted over at Ami. She was just staring at me with her mouth open a little.
"What?" I stared back at her for a couple seconds before repeating "What?!"
"Your hair... and... and you're really pale..."
I pulled my hair out from behind my head. It was a pure black color rather than my normal brown hair. And holding it was the contrast in chalk-white skin.
"What the hell?" I shook my hand and let it fall back behind me.
We hadn't noticed this change earlier because, though we can see in the dark, demons can't make a good judgement of color in the same situation. We just see shapes, black and white.
Ami just continued to stare at me and said"Are you a vampire or something?"
"The sun's up." I had to remind her.
"Right, right..."
"Must be the shadow again." I sighed.
"Eh, whu? Wait... wait, what?"
"Screw it, you'll find out eventually. I'm possessed." I just put the fact right out there.
"Really?" she didn't sound very surprised "It's not gonna take me, is it?"
I shook my head "It said that we're too rare now to just give one of us up."
"That's kinda discouraging." an uncomfortable look came over her "But honestly, how stupid do you have to be to get possessed with people like that around you?"
"It got lucky. Hoshi was the only one with me and it slipped away from her weapon."
"Yeah, yeah, I would've kicked it's ass."
"I think I just did." I laughed "When I was asleep earlier, I think I went somewhere it didn't want me to."
"What? You've been in the cave the whole time. I've been watching."
"It's in my head, kinda hard to explain without seeing it firsthand... It hurts though... This thing can mess with my mind, make me feel pain, show me stuff that it only wants me to think is real... Hell, I don't even know if this is real."
"I'm real, don't worry about it."
"Doesn't matter, I can't help it if it's fake, so I'll just go with it and yell at the shadow later."
Ami laughed "You yell at it?!"
"Yeah, it doesn't do much but it makes me feel better. What's so funny?"
She calmed herself down and said "It's just a weird mental picture. So you're not going to attack us, are you?"
I shook my head again "It can't attack people if my subconscious considers them friends... everyone else it's met are either dead or were seriously injured... Clad being the only survivor... We didn't meet on very good terms."
"Oh..." Ami looked down at the ground.
We sat in silence again. I loved to just sit by the river, listening to the water flow by. It was peaceful.
"Now what do we do?" Ami asked.
"Not sure... But what I do know is, I'm done travelling." I lied back on the ground "I've seen enough for the rest of my life. I'm staying right here. We've gotta rebuild... somehow..."
"Yeah, we can't be the last two, but I kinda meant about your... shadow."
"Oh... I guess I'll have to live with it... And even though we're isolated, it doesn't have a choice but to stay with me, so I guess it's fine.”
“You're fine with that... thing living inside you?” Ami sounded disturbed “I mean I can understand you getting used to it, but just saying that it's alright there?”
“Why not, I can't do anything about it.”
“Hmm...”
“I am a little disturbed about what I saw when I broke through earlier... I died.”
“Huh?”
“Yeah, I watched myself being killed. There was someone standing over me with a bow, they just shot down and killed me... I think I felt it...”
“Whoa, maybe that's why you're so pale.”
“I'm not dead Ami.”
“I was just kidding...”
I had been trying to forget about that dream since I woke up, and now it was fresh in my mind. I ran through it again. The little speech. Me floating up. The figure pulling back the bow.
The sound of the river disappeared. I let out a loud scream as my vision blurred into one indifferent shape. I clutched at my chest and continued my screaming. The pain was back again.
And just as quickly as it started, it disappeared. I looked up and saw Ami standing over me with a horrified look on her face. I breathed in and out a few more times, letting my hand fall to the ground as relief set in. I had only felt it for a moment, but it was just as painful as in my dream.
“What the hell was that?!” Ami yelled at me “You're freaking me out!”
I looked around nervously. I knew it was true. I was no longer asleep. “It... It was more than a dream...” I frantically felt around my chest and was immediately relieved to feel a pulse. “It wasn't a dream!”
